Get Dumb Strong More Smarterer by Tim Cormier

I am pleased to announce that CFA will be sponsoring its very own Strong(Wo)man team! Training will begin Nov. 1st.

The Team is open to any CFA or CF 28 member that wishes to participate. The training will culminate into our team competing in an event in the Spring/Summer Strongman Season of 2014. If you join the team, it will be expected that you compete on some level.

We will have an interest meeting on Oct. 17th at 6:30pm and one on Oct. 19th at 11:00am if you can’t make the first one. Please try to make one of these if you plan on participating. If you absolutely can’t make either date, then contact me so we can set up time to talk about the level of commitment I will expect from the strongman team. The StrongMan Team is one of the many programs at CFA which is included in your membership. We encourage any athletes interested in StrongMan to join CFA to begin training and competing. You don’t have to do CrossFit to be part of StrongMan.

Being a part of the team does have requirements. I will only train members that are willing to follow the training regiment as prescribed. No, that doesn’t mean you have to be able to lift a certain amount or have any of the skills necessary for the events (I’ll more than happily teach you all of those), but it does mean you will have to train a whole different way than most of you are used to, you will also have to adjust your diets to eat more and eat better quality food to balance out the quantity at which you’ll eat.

The Strongman team will also have a strength bias (you’ll be lifting heavy stuff, more often). A lot of emphasis will be put on things like grip strength and carrying heavy, awkward things for time and distance modalities. Our conditioning will take on a different form; metcons will be short and heavy.

I have jokingly recommended this for some of our guys who aren’t mobile enough to do the Olympic Lifts, but in reality we are going to have to challenge our mobility more than most people due to the extreme load we will be placing on our frames. This means time will still be spent smashing all the tender places with barbells, shoving lacrosse balls into the tight nooks and crannies, and showing up to John’s Thursday night Mobility Class as often as possible.

Please attend one of the dates listed above for a more in depth look at what this new strongman thing will look like. Showing up will not mean you’re committing, so if you’re just curious please come and find out how to be a stronger more fasterer version of yourself.
