Functional Screens – Ready to Improve Your Fran Time, Move Comfortably or PR Your Snatch? by John Davidson

CrossFit training involves functional movements with speed and intensity. The training philosophy works extremely well and has amazing results. CrossFit has personally given my life back to me. Of course, because of my wife doing CrossFit, Iʼm no longer the strongest person in my house…my wife has taken that honor!!

The human body was made with a certain amount of range of motion and proper movement patterns. Over time, we tend to lose the ability to use our body at its full potential. When we lose joint motion or motor control of that joint, we gain poor movement patterns that eventually cause pain and inhibit performance. Through functional screening, we can find the areas we are lacking mobility and use tools to fix these area and improve your quality of life. Letʼs unlock your bodyʼs potential!

As a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, and Certified Athletic Trainer, I spend everyday screening and doing full assessments on people of all ages to find dysfunctional movements and help guide them through a program of changing those movement patterns and making them fully functional. Much of my career has been spent with sports teams ranging from youth to the professional level.

I’m excited to join the staff at CrossFit Alexandria! I will be offering functional screens which consist of a one-time evaluation to test three aspects of movement — 1) the range of motion of the shoulders, spine, hips and ankles, 2) ability to control your body through specific motions, 3) and overall balance. As an example, a portion of the test consist of performing an overhead squat and analyzing your movement and position. After the evaluation, you will be provided with a specific mobility regiment that will allow you to increase your joint mobility and stabilization leading to reduced chance of injury and increased performance.

Rather you are CrossFitting to be generally fit or you are a competitive athlete, the prescribed mobility work you get from the results of the screen will reduce injury risk and increase performance. The evaluation will take 20-30 min depending on the person. The cost is $75. I will be performing screens on Saturday mornings and Thursdays evenings.
