CrossFit for Kids After School Program

CrossFit for Kids After School Program by Shelly McRae and William Albritton

CrossFit Kids is an education and athletic program that is specifically designed for kids and helps them develop a lifelong love of fitness. In a group setting, children participate in fun and engaging workouts that deliver measurable results and prepare them to be well-rounded athletes. In addition, certified teachers assist kids with their home work, reading skills and test preparation. Numerous studies document increased scholastic performance when physical activity is incorporated with study time.

The goal of the program is for those attending CrossFit kids to stand out in classroom performance and to constantly improve their athletic ability and desire for fitness and nutrition. The program will have measurable benchmarks to track classroom and athletic performance. We also aim to send the kids home with considerably less homework to get done in the evening and more time to play and relax with with parents and siblings.

All of the movements are taught safely and effectively under the close supervision of thoroughly trained CrossFit Kids Coaches. Our workouts will increase physical competence in 10 fitness domains: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy. Kids will become well-rounded athletes who will be better at any and every sport they play because CrossFit Kids doesn’t coach them to be good at just one thing.

Schedule: CrossFit Kids will be held after school from 3:30 – 5:20pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Each day will start with a healthy snack of real food and a brief nutrition class. The kids will then have alternating sessions of exercise/skill work with coaches and  scholastic work with certified teachers. The program will kick off on April 2.

Ages: The program is designed for 1st to 5th graders. The program will be limited to 10 students.

Cost: The cost of the program is $200/month for CFA members and $215/month for nonmembers.

Summer: The camp will last through the end of the school year. At that point, the program will transition into our summer program which we have held the past two years.

Information Session: An informational session will be held on March 18 for parents to get an overview of the program and ask questions. It will start at 5:30pm at CrossFit Alexandria.

Program Manager & Staff: The manager of CrossFit Kids will be Shelly McRae. Shelly has 18 years experience in the education field. She is currently a Curriculum Specialist with the Rapides Parish School Board. Shelly was named Teacher of the Year in 2009 and 2011 and has taught 1st through 5th grade. She has a Masters in Education Supervision. In addition, Shelly will be supported by certified CrossFit Kids coaches and certified teachers.
